What a surreal night! Sam and I just got home from seeing Matisyahu and Balkan Beat Box. What an amazing show. What a talented Jew. What a strange spectacle. I've never seen so many Jews in one place in my life. We almost felt a little under-Jewished, Sam without a yarmulke and me without a...well, I don't know....a nose job? Okay, that was really wrong, but it's kinda funny....if you're Jewish and grew up around Jappy girls. Yes folks, that is indeed a word used to describe Jewish American Princesses (or spoiled, rich Jewish girls). Please Jappy girls, do not take offense!
But I digress....
A young man in full Hasidic Garb rapping...Hasidic Reggae...Klezmer sounds...A Hasidic Jew beatboxing...References to Bob Marley...Hasidic men dancing traditional Israeli dances on stage...The Shema being sung at a concert (were we at a Reggae show or at Shabbat services?) I've listened to the man's music and love it, I've seen his pictures and was intrigued, but tonight was a real treat. It was crazy! The music was amazing and the crowd was so into it. I really don't know what else to say. If ever you have a chance to see this guy in concert, it's well worth any amount of money (okay, not ANY amount, but you get the picture). We overheard the guy behind us telling his friends about seeing the Black Crows at Hammerstein Ballroom last year and that it wasn't sold out, but that Matisyahu sold out two nights in a row! Guess he has quite the following...
